"Maybe the Foundation Trilogy...but really it would need a hell of an update...Asimov was so fifties and such a chauvinist to boot. To say it lacks an edge would be an understatement. Sill, I Robot turned . . ." more

On Gather, I'm Looking For ...:- good photographers
- exposure for myself as an author (let's be honest)
- like-minded individuals with whom I can discuss the various aspects of my life
Interests
-
Favorite Music, Artists, Genres:
-
Favorite Books, Writers, Genres:Keep the Aspidistra Flying, Jude the Obscure, The Sane Society, Age of Innocence, Globalization and Its Discontents, Manufacturing Consent, - if it actually made me change my mind about something, it's a favourite book, - needless to say 99% of what you find on the shelf of the bookstore is a waste of paper, I don't have favourite authors, just favourite books.
-
Favorite Movies, Actors, Genres:
-
Favorite TV Shows, Actors:
-
Interests and Activities:I don't really have passing "interests" or "hobbies" for that matter, except maybe travelling., I write books "ISAK" is my first. I'm currently working on two more, "Frustration of a Line" and "Cult". I also publish work by what I would term "alternative" authors, i.e. those who write because they have something to say and they say it well, as opposed to those who write because they live in their own little dreamworld and can't get a real job. Just so that no one gets confused about the alternative part, I'd like to point out that my standards are about 50 times as high as the average publishing house., I also model, mostly for art exhibitions, but I've also done a few ads., See above. I didn't mention yet, though really you should have guessed by this point, that my main interest in life is human rights. I have a law degree and right now I'm writing my doctorate on "Democracy and International Law".

Other Affiliations:I'm not quite sure what's meant by this. I won a load of scholarships...I never submitted ISAK for any prizes which has come to bite me in the ass, but then again if you're the kind of person who needs to have things preordained by higher powers, ISAK isn't for you, anyway., I'm not the kind of person who's very likely to be accredited by the powers that be., Vice-Chairman, Dublin New Writers' Forum, I used to belong to Mensa Canada and Amnesty International, but I've since quit both.

I write about the times of my young adulthood. the late 60's etc. One of my friends at the time was an EOKA terrorist...but it wasn't her terrorism I identified with. my point in exchanging books with fellow writers was for the diversity and the enjoyment of undiscovered talent. I am very far behind in my reading by now, but I'm happy to say the writers I've come to know at amazon are very talented and from a wide range of political views. tripe is tripe...whether from the right or left....while good writing is good writing. I don't read about politics per se. there's enough of that elsewhere...tho very often books i enjoy have a political dimension because it fits the story in an unassuming way. next time I go to amazon i will look you up and read about what you have written.
sounds like you had an enjoyable summer. thanks for writing back. JWC

Hi, Roslyn -- I really liked your comments on my piece about unpublishable books, and thought you really nailed it with this quote -- "A book should polarize people." Wonderfully said, and speaking of polarizing people, well, you may want to check out johnw.cassell here in Gather as to my latest (The Bathsheba Deadline.) This novel has only been out for a while and it sure has them polarized -- which is as it should be. As for Indecent Proposal, glad to liked the movie, but I wrote the novel, someone else wrote the screenplay. I'm happy with the job Hollywood did with Indecent Proposal; Paramount kept the central elements of my novel -- temptation, sin, regret, forgiveness, but left out the cultural and political references of the novel that would have polarized people too much and harmed box office. There are many things that can be said in a novel, as I have in both Indecent and Bathsheba, which cannot be said in a movie. Thank goodness we still have literature and people like you, with your open mind and wisdom. Jack
